The new character will make her official debut in the story of One Piece in the upcoming movie, One Piece Film: Red, which will hit theaters in Japan on Aug. 6 and premiere in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand later this fall. Toei Animation, the studio behind the One Piece anime series, is producing the film with Gorō Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) serving as director and Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film: Gold) writing the script.
Two special prologue episodes will also be released alongside One Piece Film: Red. Airing on Aug. 14 and 21, the episodes will not only show how Uta and Luffy became close in the past but will also depict how the Straw Hat Pirates arrived at the Island of Music, the primary setting of the movie, in the present day.
Film: Red couldn’t topple Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train’s two-day opening weekend record which still stands at 3.3 billion yen but cleanly took down JUJUTSU KAISEN 0’s 1.6 billion yen then-second place record.
It should be noted that both Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train and JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 both opened on a Friday while One Piece Film: Red opened on a Saturday and the above numbers don’t include the Friday opening day numbers or midnight previews. If counting those numbers, One Piece Film: Red’s first weekend drops to third behind Mugen Train’s enormous 4,623,117,450 yen (US$43.8 million) and JUJUTSU KAISEN 0’s 2,694,128,150 yen (US$23.54 million) opening.
One Piece spoilers change everything we knew about Shanks
The long-awaited movie, One Piece Film: Red, is already a major success in Japan. To commemorate this occasion, the team behind the movie gave fans a small manga volume containing information about the main characters in the movie, including the fan-favorite Shanks.
Shanks has been one of the franchise's biggest mysteries for a long time, so fans always appreciate any information about him and his abilities. Still, the new data fans have about this character could completely change their perception of him.
With the highly anticipated One Piece Film: Red set to premiere in Japan this week, the film’s official website announced that special tie-in episodes for the movie would be airing this month as well.
Two new episodes will air throughout the month of August, releasing on August 14 and August 21, 2022, respectively. The episodes will serve as a tie-in prologue to the film and will depict moments from up to 10 years prior to its events, showcasing a younger Luffy and Uta hanging around Shanks’ Red Hair Pirates. Other young versions of One Piece favorites will also appear, including Nami, Zoro, and more.
One Piece‘s next film will focus on Shanks, the captain of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the Four Emperors. Shanks is an important part of the series lore, as he inspired protagonist Monkey D. Luffy to become a pirate and gave him the straw hat that he now wears.
One Piece is one of the longest-running and most beloved series in all of pop culture. The franchise kicked off in 1997 when Eiichiro Oda began publishing his One Piece manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump. The story follows the often-wacky and dangerous adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with a body made out of rubber who dreams of becoming the next King of the Pirates. Joined by his colorful crew, Luffy explores the Grand Line, searching for the titular hidden treasure. So far, over 1,000 individual chapters have been published and over 516 million copies of Oda's series have been sold globally, making it the best-selling manga of all time.
Shanks is a character that needs no introduction for any One Piece fan. He has been there since the first episode, protecting Luffy, giving us some of the most striking scenes in the series, and being an incredible all-around character.
With the plot of One Piece Film: Red revolving around him and his daughter, it was more than evident that fans would get some new information about Shanks. This is exactly what happened, not only in the movie but also in promotional material created for the film.
Here's a look at what the Red Hair Pirates are truly capable of. There will be manga spoilers from the Wano Country arc. The following information has been provided by @sandman_AP on Twitter, who recently watched the movie.
A select few people have the ability to see into the future with Observation Haki. However, One Piece Film: Red has made it clear that Shanks has the strongest Haki in the series. It's potent enough to prevent anyone from using the future sight. Of course, that's not all Shanks can do in this film.
On opening day, One Piece Film: Red brought in over 1.2 billion yen (US$8.87 million), making it the third film in Japanese history to make over 1 billion yen on opening day and on par with Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train’s first day in 2020. It is also only the second film in Japanese history (after Demon Slayer) to make 1 billion yen two days in a row.
To put in perspective how well One Piece Film: Red has done, it has already grossed nearly half of what One Piece Film: Strong World made in 2009 and is on track to take down One Piece Film: Z as the highest-grossing film in the franchise at 6.87 billion yen, especially with the Obon holidays coming up and Film: Red’s great word of mouth.
Toei, who is distributing the film in Japan, claimed on Saturday that they were aiming for the “highest-grossing start in the series.” They very much achieved that goal!
As the Admirals make their way into the music festival, Kizaru also starts to sweat over Shanks and his Conqueror's Haki. Keep in mind that this is the same person who wanted to fight Kaido and Big Mom by himself. Fujitora even suggests retreating to avoid casualties.
As mentioned earlier, one of these products was a small volume with details about several characters. The book contains new data for a lot of the Red Hair Pirates, like Yasopp, who is apparently more powerful than Katakuri.
There have been multiple recent developments for the franchise beyond the new movie's upcoming release and cosplay tributes. Most notably, Netflix is adapting One Piece into a live-action series, which will star Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Taz Skylar as Sanji and Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro. Moreover, a new video game, One Piece Odyssey, is in development at Bandai Namco.
One Piece fans can revisit the adventures of Luffy and his crew before the debut of One Piece Film: Red by streaming the anime's episodes on Crunchyroll.
“Uta — the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as ‘otherworldly,’” reads the official synopsis for the film. “Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans — excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance — the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.”
One Piece Film: Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll, who'll be releasing the film internationally across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometime this fall, describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:
Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll, with new episodes coming out as they air in Japan.
Some may argue that One Piece Film: Red isn't canon so this doesn't count. Even then, Oda was still the supervisor for the film. He doesn't mind portraying Shanks as a dangerous threat to the Admirals. Oda has done it before when he scared off Ryokugyu in Wano Country.
Obviously, their captain also had to be featured in the book, which absolutely delivered. The volume contains information about Shanks that no fan would have expected, like the new powers we are yet to see on the show.
One Piece Film: Red is directed by Goro Taniguchi (Code Geass) with a script written by Kuroiwa Tsuto (One Piece Film Gold). The creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, is an executive producer for the film. The movie premieres on August 6, 2022 in Japan.
